Artist Studio Space for rent in Columbia SC

Sent by Chappy Manning of TAG

I've been advised of an opportunity to lease some studio space on Carlisle St. (cut-through between Daly and Millwood, behind Mad Platter), and in order to keep the costs $200 range (includes utilities) we need some more artists interested in sharing the space. Would you be able to send out an email to TAG members asking if anyone is interested? There are 2 options, one space smaller than the other, the smaller one has 1 bathroom & 2 large rooms so we're looking for 4 artists to share, the larger space has several different rooms & 2 baths and could hold 6-7 artists' spaces.

Please contact me directly at cmanning13@sc.rr.com. So far, there are 2 of us who are willing to commit, but as I say, we need more to make it affordable.

Trenholm Artist Guild Meeting Nov 8, 2010

The Trenholm Artists Guild (known locally as TAG) is located in Columbia, South Carolina. Members include but are not limited to amateur and professional artists who work in watercolor, oil, acrylics, pastel, sculpture, fiber, and photography. Residents of the Greater Columbia area over 18 years of age are invited to join. Meetings are held monthly September through May on the 2nd Monday of the month at Forest Lake Park, 6820 Wedgefield Road. Visitors are invited to attend our meetings.

NOVEMBER PROGRAM

November's speaker will be Diane Gilbert. Come to the Forest Lake Park at 6:30 to register and enjoy refreshments. The business meeting and guest speaker program will begin at 7:00.

From mosquitoes and caterpillars to life-like monkeys and snakes, Diane Gilbert's sculpture is centered in the world of nature. Diane was born and grew up in Canada's French-speaking province, Quebec. With extensive education in various art media, she worked for several years as a professional designer, creating costumes, mascots, movie props, and items for museums and other organizations
After relocating to the southeastern United States in 2000, Diane began to work with clay. She fell in love with the feel and potential of the medium. She believes that clay is powerful and feels grounded with her hands in clay. The medium is well suited for expressing her love for natures large and small creatures.

When it comes to the technical character of Diane's work, almost anything is fair game. She uses several types of clay, from earthenware to porcelain. For finishes, she uses a full range of elements: glazes, underglazes, stains, oxides, lusters, and paint. On average she fires her pieces three times to get the effects desired but may fire her work as many as six times. Additionally, other media is sometimes incorporated in her pieces including wood fragments, wire, feathers, fiberglass and found and recycled objects.
Diane's wonderful creations can be found at Southern Pottery and Havens Gallery in Columbia.

Painting at Utopia with The Dubber in Columbia, SC

Utopia....
One of my favorite things to do is painting to music... and the opportunity to paint to LIVE music is such a treat . I have been very blessed lately to paint on a regular basis with a multitude of musicians performing live. Here I am at Utopia.. and I am painting at the CD Release party of "Global Warning" performed by The Dubber.
The Dubber...
Some of you know, I have been following The Dubber's music since I first heard him back a few years ago at H20 on State St in West Columbia. I remember seeing this giant of a man with dread locks and muscular arms and noticing he wore a turban. Having no idea what his music would be I sat there with artist friend Michelle Rogers and this man sat down and closed his eyes and started playing; the lively crowd silenced as we all sat in awe listening to the gentle voice and unique music from the guitar played by Wendell Culbreath. It was at that moment, I literally was under the spell of the music, just as when I paint...I am so into the painting... I am at one with the painting.
It was probably close to a year before I found out exactly who he was and where else he performed... and this time when I heard him I had a front row seat and introduced myself. I saw he was one with the music like I had felt ... so many times when I paint. We exchanged cards and I wrote to him telling him how I noticed all these things and from then on I went to as many shows as I can. In fact for a while I went to every one. I still try to, but my time is divided by my own art interests and other music as well. Watch this blog for more info on The Dubber!
yours truly,
Jean Bourque

SC State Museum hosts "Business of Art" workshop

Business of Art Workshop, Columbia, S.C. --- How to prosper in the art business is the subject of a professional workshop for artists of all levels to be hosted by the South Carolina State Museum April 9-11. Beginning artists and seasoned professionals alike are encouraged to bring examples of their art to this useful weekend workshop that will help them create a business plan and marketing strategy.

The workshop will be run by Tony Rajer, art conservator, artist and instructor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author of “Museums, Zoos and Botanical Gardens of Wisconsin” and of a forthcoming book on the business of art. Each student will write an individual business plan tailored to his or her specific needs. Additional topics include portfolio preparation, gallery contacts and how to receive exposure. Rajer has taught this course for the past 10 years at the University of Wisconsin and is excited to share this course with the South Carolina artist community.

“Tony Rajer's business of art course offers a unique opportunity for artists to learn from an instructor with an experienced insider's perspective on the business side of the art world,” said Chief Curator of Art Paul Matheny. The workshop will go from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, April 9 and from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11.

The workshop is limited to 15 students and costs $100 for members and $125 for non-members. The price includes instruction during the weekend, a week of online counseling after the class and a booklet, as well as other useful handouts.“This class will help provide the knowledge and tools artists need to help them assemble their portfolios and public relations material, and to approach galleries and art centers about their own work,” Matheny said.

For more information, contact the museum’s Public Programs Manager Celeste Wszola at 803-898-4952, or visit southcarolinastatemuseum.org.

A poem from the archives: Crystal Enlightenment

Mixed media painting on 20x16 inch canvas c by Jean Bourque 2008

CRYSTAL ENLIGHTENMENT
A poem by Jean Bourque c 1987

Crystal Enlightenment of fantasies forgotten
Previously vanished in a perilous sea
Abandoned by paranoia and calamities
Returning with an urgent vengeance
To awaken the dead, into a new vibrancy,
Acting in haste, no lethargic hesitation,
No reflections, just immediate response,
And the obsession takes it victim,
Into another realm of activity,
Until the bomb has exploded and exhaustion,
Has regained it's control, in the pause of time,
A new voice whispers: balance, balance, balance.
