Neuro-Chemical Breakdown Art Show Review

Anima Jung was the genius behind the unique one night art show held Nov. 12th, 2011 at the Conundrum Music Hall in W Columbia, SC. The premise was there are 8 basic human emotions and 9 artists were each assigned an emotion. We had to keep it secret about which emotion we were assigned, but now the cat is out of the bag. The emotion I was assigned was "Disgust". Those of you that follow my art know my art work is mostly about music, peace, love, flowers, joy, and lively colors. Being a very positive person, at first, I was not happy to be assigned a negative emotion. I knew I would have to make art specifically for the show and thought okay, this is going to take me out of my comfort zone. I spent hours of research online, reading disgusting news, looking at disgusting images and reading what the word "disgust" actually meant. Everyday as I rode all over the state of SC, I thought about what it meant to me.

I started a lot of little projects, one was cutting out news stories that I found to be disgusting and making a handmade book. For some reason, I couldn't bring myself to paint something disgusting so decided to do other artsy things. I sculpted a mask with a digusted look. I cut three wholes in the chin and was going to hang other pieces of clay from it but then opted to make it into a key holder, I attached three brass rings, for the keys to hang on.

The show featured art by Michael Krejewski, Brian Barr, Brian Pyle, Tennyson, Lisa Gray, Allan O'Mudd, Jean Bourque, Cedric Umoja and Mustafa. Each artist explored an emotion. The art show was mainly paintings and they were all wonderful works of art. Tennyson created several shadow box wall hangings, Mustafa showed photography in which Anima the creator of the show was his subject. They were very well done. In addition to three painting jean made a clay mask and a recycled road trash wall hanging. Lighting was provided by RJ Foley and Keith Bates.

The show was for one night only. We all talked about the emotions we were assigned and agreed it was a challenge. Photos here by Keith Bates.

Facebook Privacy Changes

http://mashable.com/2011/08/23/facebook-privacy-changes-guide/

I just wanted to share this information with you from Mashable a blog about Social Media. They always have the latest info, so you may want to follow them in your efforts to keep up with the ever changing social media networks and technology. Click the above link for detailed info.

The Facebook changes are very in depth and as of this time, I have not thoroughly investigated how everything works. Hopefully, I can give you some tips over the next few weeks so we can all make the transition, without going mad. :)

Here is what I have noticed so far....

*List who you are with when you change your status... if you want others to know

**a scrolling list (right side bar) shows when friends had started playing various games or downloading apps.

*** on any behind the wall message; a listing of every inbox conversation you ever had with that person, even those that had been deleted.

****When posting to your own wall you can limit each posts availability to any of your various friend lists (similar to Google+ circles) or have it be public (to everyone)

*****pasting from somewhere else no longer works on status. So those of us that like to post quotes and share info from a variety of sources will no longer to be able to just paste it from else where.

******The tagging will now let you pre-approve them, but you need to go to your privacy settings to enable that feature.

Highly Recommend: Go to your privacy settings and check every item.
I had a time period today where no one could see anything I posted except for Yoville players. Weird, I know. But I was lucky enough to figure it out.

It's really to soon to tell what all these changes are and how they will effect the trillion Facebook users.... and the art and music community, only time will tell.

Yours truly,

Jean Bourque

Jean Bourque Live Painting April 27th Artsy Fartsy

April 2011
Jean Bourque kicked off the month with a solo art show at Artsy Fartsy, running for the month. The reception was on April Fool's night. Everyone was expecting a bit of shenanigans by artist Jean Bourque. However, most people were friendly and no tricks were played and only one or two foolery things happened. For one; the reception was slated as going until 830 and it actually went to ten. We were very fortunate to have a good crowd, coming and going throughout the evening.

Keith Bates emceed the event and had 7 musical acts performing live along with two well known poets, Al Black and John M. Starino. The featured band was REDD WYNE, additional performers Kevin Dozier, Michael Sanders, Julia and Barton Beckham, Kurt Linguini and Chief Roy, Mel Simms of Vassaboo, and the evening topper was with William Christoper playing his keyboards. All the musicians were excellent and many folks commented on what a great gala type event we hosted at Artsy Fartsy.

The art by Jean Bourque was well received. The show featured 52 performance paintings all done in the last year to live musical performances by a variety of bands and solo acts. Many people commented on their favorites and people expressed a lot of amazement at seeing so many paintings all in one place by this artist. The show was well lit and hung with professional labels identifying each piece by title and the musical act it was performed too. The musicians especially enjoyed seeing their names and names of their friends and paintings she painted to each.

With 52 pieces, naturally, there is a large selection of works in almost every color. Jean's art palette changes as the music affects her soul. Something that can only clearly be seen in a large exhibit. The show runs thru April 30th, so take a look see at Artsy Fartsy at 906 Knox Abbott Dr. Cayce.

On April 27th, we will have a grand finale party with Mind Gravy featuring music by Bob Kilgore, poetry by Roy Seegars and many more. Jean Bourque will paint live to bob's music and we expect a good crowd. The event will run 8-10. Come on by....

Fundraiser for Deleveled at White Mule Tues 10/26

Jeff Pitts of the Columbia band, Deleveled recently reported while he and his band mates were on tour in the NY area their van was robbed and a lot of musical equipment was stolen and two guitars the band used regularly are now gone.

Several musicians have stepped up and offered to let the band borrow equipment so they can honor the commitments they had. Musicians are pretty good like that. They treat each other like family much more than I would have guessed.

Anyway, I am asking you my dear readers to do what you can for these fine musicians. They are just starting to make it big and I really think this group has got what it takes to go the distance. Wouldn't it be great to see a band from Columbia SC make it big? It's been a long time since Columbia has had a band make it on the national level.

This Tuesday night Oct. 26th, I am painting live with Deleveled at The White Mule on Main St. They are having a pay what you want concert, with all proceeds going to the band. In addition I will have a guitar painting on silent auction that evening in which I will donate 50% of the proceeds to the band. Doors open at 8PM with an opening band Prettier than Matt and then Deleveled will play later. If you are on Facebook or Reverbnation; you can search the band to hear their music.

I would like to see fellow artists and musicians turn out for this event and show your support for each other. If you cannot make it to the event and would like to donate or place a bid please contact me as soon as possible to make arrangements.

Thank you,
yours truly,
Jean Bourque

Going to Lady Gaga Tonight in Charlotte! Woohoo!

I feel like a pre-adolescent kid...all excited as if I am going to my first concert. Lady Gaga came on the scene a few years ago and the world quickly took notice. It seems from what I can tell there are strong feelings about her one way and another. My friends, who BTW are mostly artists and MUSICIANS... really love her, like I do...or they hate her. I just don't get the hating stuff. Some say she is a Madonna wanna be...I don't think so ...this woman is a classically trained pianist...which is more preparation than Madonna had musically. Madonna was a trained dancer, not a singer and so to me...there is no comparison. Her showmanship is more like Cher, it's over the top, and I am so excited to go see :)

NOW, those of you that know me, know I have almost every Madonna CD up until about 2005 when I started listening to a wider variety of music. As much as I have listened to Madonna and probably know all the words to all the songs from the 90's... I never went to a Madonna concert. However, I have been to three Cher concerts and a multitude of other concerts in the past ten years. With Lady Gaga from the first time I saw her, I couldn't wait to go see her in concert! In fact, for this concert tonight, I discovered the show was coming in like Jan or Feb... and as soon as tickets were being sold... I contacted my friends from Charlotte to see if they wanted to go and YES we all decided to go and the plans were set. It seems like we have waited forever, having tix so far in advance and now the show is going to be tonight. Oh MY God...what to wear? LOL!

Some people probably do not know this, but there were tickets selling for as high as $800.! Mine was high enough...even being almost in the nose bleed section...we should have a good views from the angle we are at and of course there are teleprompters..no chance of getting a close up pic. This woman is an extremely talented woman; gifted singer pianist, dancer, organizer, marketeer, fashion icon, songwriter...and so much more..she is a show. She doesn't just stand in front of a mic and sing (which in itself, is hard enough) she creates a show...you will never forget and I can not wait to be part of the big MONSTER BALL!!! (and all you haters can just shut up, LOL!)

Me and my poker face...gonna have a good time to night....

yours truly,
Jeanee

Recap of my art happenings... 2009

I have been so totally immersed in the art world and everything I am doing that I haven't even had time to write on this blog. I actually didn't have any internet service other than that which could be borrowed from friends, the library, the coffee shops and my cell. For some people that may well have been enough and I would have thought it would be for myself. However, it was not. I had apparently been spending a good many hours on the internet between writing the blog, all the various social networking sites I am on and the various applications and games that are a part of my daily life in cyberville.

Prior to this experience I would not have described myself as addicted to the internet. However, I do remember back about 6 years ago someone actually pointing out that I spent way more time on the internet then anyone they ever met. Yeah, but I was also in school studying to be a web designer. So, to me that didn't count. Anyway, I have my certificate in web design because I already had a degree in something else LOL! At any rate, no I am not a web designer...but at one time...I was really into web design. But like any language, if you don't use it you lose it. I had even gone back to school 2007-08 and got updated on my design skill set and on the entire Photo Shop package. I learned what I learned and I have had to adapt as changes come up. MS updated and so did windows and as soon as you completely have the package understood...along comes something new.
I had an art show in August with Jean Ehler called "A Pair of Jeans" in North Charleston, SC at the Convention Center. that show hilighted that although Jean and I had both studied with Ilona Royce Smithken for at least the last 14 years, and she and I have painted together for at least the last ten years several times a year...we still maintain totally different styles. This was followed by a Sept. show at Frame of Mind on Main St Columbia SC with Barbie Mathis and it was very fitting as many of the pieces in this show were done at Barbie's house. The theme was "Flowering" and all its forms. The show was very well received and I introduced my beautiful florals with blow ups off butterflies I captured on film close up. They are amazing even if I say so myself. These have moved to Avanti designer showroom on Huger St and can be purchased there.
After my two, two women art shows I have had two solo shows. From Oct 12 to Dec 1, my art work featuring coffee was on display in the rotunda at the lower level in the Richland County Public Library on Assembly St. Columbia, SC. I had created several new pieces for Gotham Bagel aka Gotham Nights. This show is still running, so check it out. I have 16 museum quality canvas mixed media paintings all at least 20x30 gracing the walls of the cafe.

Richland County Public Library on Assembly St.

Inspired by Coffee"
The library will host artist Jean Bourque and her unique artwork on display on the lower level rotunda. The show will feature all NEW works by the artist. Most of the artworks are 30x20 with a few smaller ones and a few larger ones. They are all for sale. The title of the show is "Inspired by Coffee".
Bourque says this show is all about Coffee. Many of the pieces were inspired by that first morning cup and in most of them coffee has actually been used as a medium for marking the canvas. The coffee filters were dropped on , left to dry and made various stains in some and in others hot black coffee was dripped, stained, left to sit on the actual canvas, and or allowed to drip dry or sun dry.
Coffee in full caffeinated versions and the bolder the better are a true requirement while working on my many assemblages in the artistic world. It is my hope that the viewers will relate to the coffee experience and delight in the wonders of coffee as I have enjoyed producing this work and with that said...I am off to have another cup of Coffee.
The library show will start Oct. 12th and run through Dec. 2nd.

Columbia Has Got Talent- Come See!!

The longer I live in Columbia, the more I realize how many talented people we have here. We have a very large visual arts community. I probably know over 500 visual artists just in Columbia. By visual I mean artists that paint, draw, sculpt, blow glass, make beads, do photography, graphic arts and design, altered books, fiber artists, wearable arts such as fashion design, home arts such as bowl turning, wood working, assemblage, wall hangings and quilts. We also have a large clay community.

Photograph "Five Points at Night" by Jean Bourque (prints available)

(Taken the night of Advertisers Bail Out)

I know there is the Gourd Art group, a design Group, a live drawing group and the Decorative Art group, not to mention at least 6 professional art associations with at least 50 members or more. I mean the sheer abundance of art here is amazing. This city should be known the world over for its art community. We have more artists here than anyone realizes I am sure of that! Now that I have really thought about this;I probably know closer to 1000 artists.

We have a great music diversity and range of talents; in Columbia at USC, at night spots and outdoor festivals with many bands, groups, soloists and performances all over the City. Just about any night during the week and of course weekends you can find live entertainment. We have poets that publicly preform every week like John Starino in at least 3 different venues that I know of. Go to Verseworks at the Art Bar or Open Mic at H20, Macs on Main, Jammin Java, and many more.

We have legendary musicians like Skipp Pearson performing weekly at Hunterer Gatherer playing the Sax every Thursday night. We have Jeff Liberty on harmonica and guitar singing the blues. That man can sing too. Both of them have been willing to work with new performers and help them get going. There's Danielle Howle playing guitar and singing. This is just to name a few. I mean Columbia has GOT talent. We have a huge artistic community here.

Theater: We have several great theaters such as Trustus is a great venue and sometimes they have alternative features and they are reasonably priced. We have three historic theaters as well as a huge Convention Center and so much more. The Workshop Theater, the Town Theater and much much more. Columbia's Visitors Bureau attracts visitors from all over the world.

Ballet: We have a world class ballet and several other ballet and dance companies. This town is bursting with Talent. You can find ballet and dance performances or take lessons any week in Columbia.

People say they don't know where to find out about what's going on; there should be someplace where all things could be posted. I agree. ARTSAILS1 is my volunteer effort to put out the info I know about. So if you have something for me to post; email me by clicking here at ARTSAILS1. If you applaud my effort; want to add this blog as a link to your site, have news to share or be added to the email list or make a purchase (art and photography is for sale) that would be wonderful as well.

Columbia has got Talent...in every area of the arts...think art, think Columbia!!!

For the Love of Art commentary

You know every now and then even the most positive of artists can have a streak of unsuccessful art shows. Perhaps a contradiction in terms, as any art show is successful if people come out to it. However; since the goal for a working artist is to be self supporting with their creations; no sales is considered unsuccessful.

Having been a sales person in other businesses in my management and marketing career; I know the importance of keeping a positive attitude. I can honestly say, I am positive most of the time...I maybe have a 2% error rate. LOL! Anyway; my point is as a fellow artist; we must consider any show with people attending and looking as a success. Because; you never know who took your cards and what they really thought about you and your art. Some people like to 'follow' the artist from show to show for a while.

When I do an art show it feels more like I go to see my friends than to sell my art. I often will sell something months after someone has seen it. So, after every show regardless of the sales, I always remind myself someone that was at this show will come back and buy my art or request a show or a quote or something. It always happens, that way.

I love art, I love creating it; I love sharing it and I love showing it. I am blessed to have this talent and a love for people, words, writing and colors. So it's easy to be positive about art. The huge demands on my time and my finances, the pressing for deadlines, the prep work that customers never see aside from the actual art creation; its all worth it. Put my paintbrush in my hand swirl a few colors and away I go...into my own little art world. I am so grateful to have this love this attitude of gratitude, this blessing.

Thank you; Thank you!!

A Day in the Art World in Columbia SC

Toffee and Diva

The art show at Starbucks had a decent turn out considering the rain. Forever the social butterfly, I had to talk to everybody...about their art. When I arrived Joey my video instructor was already there and he had scoped out my art. He said his daughter would love it. Young people do love my work! We made plans to produce my art video and I am so thrilled to have a DVD made!

Later, I stopped by "If" Art Gallery and enjoyed works by Laura Spong!! What a great abstract artist she is! I picked up cards and fliers to distribute for the Open Studios tour for May 3 and 4 in Columbia SC, organized by Wim Roefs. We all must do our part to help get the WORD out.

I delivered fliers at Adesso on Main St. where they were having an Open House. I toured the facility and talked up the Open Studios Tour. Seriously, it looked like an art reception in the lobby... I treated it like it was and inquired about the art. We all agreed the original by Bruce Nellsmith in bright colors of the city was our favorite. The host promised a cook out for the next Open House.

Back at Starbucks, I put fliers out beside my art display. Then I went to West Columbia and talked about Open Studios and passed out more fliers, to the Coffee Shop on State St and The Middle Way a store beside the coffee shop. It smelled great in there, like Nag Champa. The environment made me think of meditation and creating peaceful artwork. There is artwork on their walls by artists, I have yet to meet. (very inspiring, indeed)

At last, I arrive home, unload my car and bring my art stuff back in the house. Toffee and Diva come running to greet me! Suddenly, I am surrounded by puppy love and art. How sweet it is! Have a great weekend and remember love conquers all!!!

yours,

Starbucks on Gervais Art Show Now until 4-16-08

Starbucks in the Vista on Gervais St at the corner of Lincoln St. in the heart of downtown Columbia, SC is a little known art venue, but they are a very well known Coffee Shop. What could be better great coffee and great art? I guess having great weather too, but don't let that stop you!!!
With rainy weather threatening to dampen the enthusiastic crowd of art lovers; I wish to remind you all that Starbucks will be giving out free coffee during the art reception for Jean Bourque, Ellin Baskins, Pamela Hall, Chris Hodgson, Karl A. Oglesby and Mark Johnson. So don't let a little rain stop you from coming downtown. Videographer Joey Frazier will stop by to check out the art for possible videos. Show runs until April 16th. Thanks to Jeffrey Day and "The State" newspaper for running it in the newspaper on Friday April 4th!!!
