Some of the People that Made My Day on Sunday

I woke up this morning and I was thinking about all the wonderful people that came out to show their support for the artists at "Through the Eyes of Art" at Saluda Shoals Park. I am truly a people person. I want to tell you about some of the wonderful people I met.

I met art students from USC, Richland NE HS and Irmo HS. Many young people stopped, watched, asked interesting questions about my art process. I must say a lot of them are into abstract art and for that I am grateful. Although they were very interested no one in this age group, came into the jungle to see the view I had. Several adults did venture close in so they could see this view and share my vision.

What amazed me was a little girl, no more than 9 years old, came right up to the painting I was working in and asked about it. She wanted to know why I sprayed water on it and how I decided what colors to use. She came back several times to see the various layers developing the paintings. Each time she asked really in depth questions about doing art. She reminded me of myself as a young person seeing artists painting along the shores of Cape Cod and being totally amazed at their process. I turned her around and showed her the view I was looking at and she had an ah ha moment.

Later on while C. Aluka was in the jungle photographing the art, another little girl that was only 6 years old, came right in and asked if she could see the one I was working on. As she took it in her hands to really look at it; C. Aluka captured her love for art in two to three clicks of his huge Canon camera.

One young person I must mention is Sarah a student from Richland NE HS. She had admired my artwork and the colors several times and I thought she was a volunteer. I asked her to ask one of the other artists to come by my work area and she came back. It was then I asked her if she was a volunteer and she said she wasn't. So thank you Sarah for being a great friend to the arts and passing along my message.

Two other fun things; the flute player came to my area and played and the people that came by said they got there at the right time. It was wonderful. I also met the mayor of Chapin and he filmed me and interviewed me. BTW; I did not finish any of the three paintings, however, one is only an hour away from completion. The others are probably about 4 hours each. This is the start to a great body of work. I may have to go back to the jungle and paint there again!

Paintings by our Oct. 2007 Guest Speaker: Karen A Galleher

Karen A. Galleher has a degree in Business Administration with a minor in English. Galleher, a mother of three, studied interior design and painted occasionally for family and friends, while her children where young. When Karen decided she wanted "to be a professional painter. She painted for forty hours a week for three years before marketing any work. During this time, she participated in workshops and took classes taught by nationally renowned artists. She developed her own painting signature of stylized impressionism in portraiture, landscapes, and fantasy. "

The Trenholm Artists Guild meets the second Monday of every month and is open to all artists and people interested in supporting the arts. The meeting is held at the Richland County Recreation Commission's Forest Lake Park, 6820 Wedgefield Rd, Columbia, S.C. No meetings during December, June, July and August. Refreshments are served at 7:00 p.m. and the business meeting/program begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Greater Irmo Food and Arts Festival is looking for artists to participate in the Oct. 7th event. The Festival will consist of restaurants providing samples of their food and artists showcasing and selling various fine artworks. The festival will be held in the Tuscany Village parking lot at Lake Murray Blvd. Irmo, SC from 1 p.m. – 7 p.m. There is no booth fee for the artists and only a 10% commission on sales. Dottie Gantt to Speak At Seven Oaks Art League

If you have never seen Dottie Gantt's fiber arts, its high time you did. Her work is very striking, eye-catching and non-traditional. I first saw Dottie's work when she had a solo show at The Richland County Library on Assembly St. in Columbia, SC and I never forgot her name or her work. These are not your grandma's quilts.

I had the opportunity to see her work and meet her during one of the last Wild Women's Tea Party when she had a booth there. Later when I became the Art Director for the Wild Women's Tea Party Silent Auction; I asked Dottie to participate and she volunteered to paint, decorate and dress one of the Tea Cups for the Silent Auction to raise funds for Wellspring Health.

About the Artists Background: Dottie is graduate of USC with a degree in Business Administration and a Masters in Computer Science Engineering from Kansas State University. After twenty years working as a Computer Science Engineer with ATT/Lucent she left the business world to pursue her art career and open Lakeside Designs.

The Seven Oaks Art League meets the Third Thursday of every month except the summer months and features a guest speaker each month. As our membership continues to grow, we look forward to many exciting venues.

"Pottery Making and Decoration" Adrienne Chapelle, Guest Speaker

"Adrienne’s ceramic journey began with hand built pieces in high school and continued with college classes amidst her geology major but pottery took a backseat to being a Geologist and mother until she took lessons from Columbia’s ceramic artist, Johnny Nutt in 1993. By 1999, the avocation turned into a full time calling when she began and continues to exhibit her work, manage Crooked Creek Park’s ceramic studio and give lessons and workshops. Today she specializes in elegantly designed stoneware for the table.

Adrienne’s presentation will demonstrate both hand built and wheel thrown pottery as well as discussing various methods of surface decoration. What a great opportunity to explore this art form! Karen"
