TAG Art Show at HOPF Fri March 4, 2011



Trenholm Art Guild will be hosting their annual art show at HOPF Gallery on Devine St in Columbia, SC. The reception will be Friday March 4, 2011 from 630-830 PM. The show will feature 1 painting from about 70 artists. The works will be on display for two weeks.

Jean Bourque will be showing her painting "Soothing Sounds" a painting she painted live on First Thursday in Sept 2011 in front of S&S Art Supply on Main St. Columbia to the soothing music played live by Frank Whaley. Mr. Whaley has since passed away and Jean wanted to show this painting in particular as a tribute to Frank's music in his honor. Hope you enjoy it.

Mar. 1 (ongoing permanent exhibit): City Under Siege: Charleston in The Civil War. This permanent exhibition provides a rich overview of events in and around Charleston frCity Under Siegeom secession to 1865. Including the Federal naval blockade, Union bombardment, social dislocations, privations and five major Union attempts to capture the "Queen City of the South," the war and its effects changed the lives of Charleston's residents forever. Their story-one of suffering, sacrifice, initiative and tenacity-is told with extensive images and artifacts from the Museum's collections. These include uniforms, artillery shells, firearms, "gunboat china," the watch of a fallen South Carolina soldier, and the recently-acquired prosthesis of Colonel Peter Gaillard, who lost his hand in action against Union forces on Morris Island. Mar. 1- Sept. 5: Threads of War: Clothing and Textiles of The Civil War. Commemorating the SesquicentThreads of Warennial of the Civil War. This original exhibition offers a glimpse into the lives of those on the homefront, who battled deprivation and fear while raising their families and protecting their property, as well as the soldiers who fought on the front lines. Threads of War shows that, as the nation's bloodiest conflict dragged on, it took its toll not only in lives lost, but on fashion, supplies, household goods, and every aspect of life. Women's, men's and children's clothing, uniforms and accessories, flags, quilts and coverlets, along with period magazines, newspapers, daguerreotypes and diaries provide vivid images of 1860s Charleston and a lifestyle torn apart by war. Mar. 1: Celadon Fine Arts Festival presents Call for Artists. From shoes to choice, and from fashion to human rights, women make decisions everyday. Artists are invited to submit artwork on this theme of "The Right to Shooz" for a juried art show organized by the Friends of Planned Parenthood of Beaufort, to benefit Planned Parenthood Health Systems in South Carolina. All accepted art will be priced by the artist and sold with a 50/50 split. Only original art will be accepted. All forms of media will be considered; three pieces max per artist, preferably with a max dimension of 50 inches. Deadline for submission is Friday, Mar. 4, 2011. Southern Exposure Free Concert Feb. 7th USC

Southern Exposure and the School of Music's Chamber Innovista series join forces to present masterworks by the great Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, in a wonderful evening of music, theater, and dance. The concert takes place on Monday, February 7th, at 7:30 p.m. in USC's School of Music Recital Hall (813 Assembly Street; 2nd Floor - next to the Koger Center). Admission is free.
Featuring the talents of faculty members and students from USC’s School of Music as well as the Department of Theatre and Dance, the concert focuses on several of Stravinsky’s most beloved works. We’ll begin with the brief “Fanfare for a New Theater,” performed by James Ackley and Stephen Rushing, trumpets, followed by excerpts from Stravinsky’s ballet “Petrushka” in an arrangement for two pianos by the composer, performed by pianists Marina Lomazov and Joseph Rackers. Stravinsky’s neoclassic “Octet” ends the first half, with Jennifer Parker-Harley, flute; Joseph Eller, clarinet; Peter Kolkay and Michael Harley, bassoons; James Ackley and Stephen Rushing, trumpets; Brad Edwards and Colt Campbell, trombones; conducted by Rebecca Phillips.
After intermission, we’ll conclude the concert with a semi-staged version of Stravinsky’s masterpiece “A Soldier’s Tale,” performed by William Terwilliger, violin; Joseph Eller, clarinet; Peter Kolkay, bassoon; James Ackley, trumpet; Brad Edwards, trombone; Craig Butterfield, double bass; Scott Herring, percussion; conducted by Rebecca Phillips; with special guest artists Jacob Will as The Narrator, Victor Holtcamp as The Soldier, Robert Richmond as The Devil, and Ashley Johannsen as The Princess.

Lee Monts at SOAL Feb 17, 2011

The Seven Oaks Art League is open to amateur and professional artists interested in supporting the fine arts. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month, unless otherwise stated, at 7:00 pm at Seven Oaks Park located at 200 Leisure Lane, Columbia, South Carolina.. Refreshments and fellowship time begins at 6:30 pm and we meet September through May.

February 17 Program

Guest Speaker: Lee Monts

Lee is a Christian artist who primarily creates contemporary acrylic paintings on canvas, paper and board. His formal education is in geology. He has been a resident of Columbia, South Carolina, since 1987 and is employed full time by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. Lee began painting in 2002 and has had no formal art training. He has shown extensively in South Carolina since 2003. “Testimony”, the artist’s premier solo show, was on exhibit July 23 – August 21, 2009 at the Gallery at DuPre in Columbia, SC. A feature article by nationally known writer Cynthia Boiter entitled, “Artist come lately…” appeared in the January 2010 issue of Lake Murray Magazine and Northeast Columbia Magazines. The artist was selected as one of six artists for Street Gallery III, a rotating billboard project in 2010 sponsored by the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties and Lamar Advertising. Monts also received the “In Memory of Lena Massara” Award in 2010 for his entry in the 33rd Annual South Carolina Watermedia Society Show. Monts will be featured, along with nine other selected artists, in a limited edition Capital City Art Book in Spring 2011. He is currently represented by Verve Fine Interiors and the Gallery at DuPre, both in Columbia, South Carolina and by Michael Mitchell Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina. The artist’s work can also be seen at www.323art.blogspot.com.

Lee Monts will give critiques of member's unframed works. Anyone who wishes to have a particular piece critiqued may bring one piece to the meeting February 17th. It should be unframed with mat board or foam core backing to hold it upright on the easel. This could be a painting in progress as well as a finished painting.

You say you like art and music and you love the Vista; well come on out Tuesday the 21st 8pm to midnight. So your off work and off school for the next few weeks and have time on your hands.

You have a few last minute gifts you need to get and have one person that has everything and don't know what to get them? Well, come out and check out the original artwork by resident artist Jean Bourque. She has a variety of oil paintings, mixed media paintings on canvas already hanging at The Sly Fox. In addition, Jean will be bringing a small selection of art she has painted to local musicians and each piece is an original. Prints are also available. Jean will be painting to the live music, the musician's will be playing. Come see the art show and the art demo painted to music.

At The Sly fox Singer Songwriter and Guitar player Pamela Dale will be hosting an open mic. You like to sing or play music for your friends, right? Well, come on out to The Sly Fox and play.

Or maybe you love listening to music but can't really play or sing.... come on out anyway, the musicians love to have an audience. A lot of musicians try out new songs here and having your input makes it even better. We have a large selection of musicians that come out to the Sly Fox, so we never know for sure who will be there, but it sure would be nice for you to be there.
