Trenholm Artist Guild Meeting Nov 8, 2010
The Trenholm Artists Guild (known locally as TAG) is located in Columbia, South Carolina. Members include but are not limited to amateur and professional artists who work in watercolor, oil, acrylics, pastel, sculpture, fiber, and photography. Residents of the Greater Columbia area over 18 years of age are invited to join. Meetings are held monthly September through May on the 2nd Monday of the month at Forest Lake Park, 6820 Wedgefield Road. Visitors are invited to attend our meetings.
NOVEMBER PROGRAM
November's speaker will be Diane Gilbert. Come to the Forest Lake Park at 6:30 to register and enjoy refreshments. The business meeting and guest speaker program will begin at 7:00.From mosquitoes and caterpillars to life-like monkeys and snakes, Diane Gilbert's sculpture is centered in the world of nature. Diane was born and grew up in Canada's French-speaking province, Quebec. With extensive education in various art media, she worked for several years as a professional designer, creating costumes, mascots, movie props, and items for museums and other organizations
After relocating to the southeastern United States in 2000, Diane began to work with clay. She fell in love with the feel and potential of the medium. She believes that clay is powerful and feels grounded with her hands in clay. The medium is well suited for expressing her love for natures large and small creatures.
When it comes to the technical character of Diane's work, almost anything is fair game. She uses several types of clay, from earthenware to porcelain. For finishes, she uses a full range of elements: glazes, underglazes, stains, oxides, lusters, and paint. On average she fires her pieces three times to get the effects desired but may fire her work as many as six times. Additionally, other media is sometimes incorporated in her pieces including wood fragments, wire, feathers, fiberglass and found and recycled objects.
Diane's wonderful creations can be found at Southern Pottery and Havens Gallery in Columbia.
