Great Gocco Print Demo by Marcelo Novo

Sunday January 18, 2009.

Today at if ART Gallery on Lincoln St in Columbia SC a standing room only crowd was fortunate to see the extremely talented artist Marcelo Novo of Buenos Aires, Argentina; create art
using a black Micron pen on Bristol Smooth paper. It was really quiet as everyone gathered around the table to watch Marcelo at work. So quiet in fact, that Nova asked for music and invited the guests to speak and make the program interactive. After that the place was a
buzz and Marcelo said he felt inspired. Clearly Novo works best with music and everyone could see the inspiration as it developed.

He then demonstrated the Gocco Print making kit; which apparently is no longer being made. The one he had was perfect for making small prints and greeting cards. Using a photocopy he layered paint onto it for the image making process. The printer had a 2 bulb piece that he told us not to look at the flash while it filmed. Both bulbs burn out and are only good for one print.
He explained every step of the way as he assembled it and was very in touch with his audience.

His painting was an elephant... a Novo elephant. He said he hadn't done one in a while and when he first started it looked like an elderly person's eye. A sudden change and he painted what looked like a horn and then he said he wasn't sure what it was going to be. I could see he had the flow and was going with it. Marcelo paints as the spirit moves within him and that was quite apparent watching and listening to him. When the first one finally was pulled off the press and Novo held it up; everyone clapped. They decided he would do 20 prints. As he was hand pulling the individual prints people asked questions and he answered. It was a great live demonstration and the crowd really enjoyed it.

You can see the print and possibly the original (if it's available). Stop by the gallery; the prints will be on sale there. Thanks to Wim Roefs for hosting the event. It was really quite interesting. Go see at 1223 Lincoln St., Columbia SC Tell them artsails1 sent you.

The if ART gallery is open Mon-Sat 11-7 PM. The phone is 803-255-0068.

The gallery is open Monday through Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and is located at 6 North Atlantic Wharf, off East Bay Street and across from a convenient parking garage. TAG features Howard Hunt as Guest Speaker 9/8

Like I mentioned last week; art season is about to begin. I say that with a grin as you know most of the art leagues do not meet during the summer months. Trenholm Art League aka: TAG will have their first meeting of the year in Columbia SC at 7PM Monday evening. Howard Hunt a gifted artist that paints nature's scenes on canvas as well as having an eye to capture beautiful images in photography will be the guest speaker.

Howard Hunt was very instrumental in the Artist's Round Table last year and helped secure art shows at various venues for many of our members through connections he has in the real estate business. Finding local business owners willing to allow art shows of the ART Group really makes Howard not only a gifted artist but truly a gifted entrepreneur and marketing guru. His presentation should be very informative and interesting.

I wish I could make it there; but I will be out of town on business. So ...go in my place and have a good time. Don't forget to tell Howard you read about him on my blog.

Artsails1 is Thinking, Again!

"Journey" c by Jean Bourque
Silk Collage m/m on paper (sold)

Thoughts of an Artist by Jean Bourque 12-18-07

As artists, we wear many faces. When we create we are our truest selves, for there lays our freedom, our soul, our very being. Everything that I am stems up and out from the artistic soul I was born with.

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about what it means to be an artist. I mean not in the obvious sense but on a deeper level. What does it mean and what does it take in terms of commitment, time, passion, expense and love to develop one's self as an artist.

Then there are the practical concerns which at times can be more pressing than the joy of art. How can I be self supporting as an artist? How can anyone especially a single person, be above the survival level without a fund or supporters; be that an inheritance, a grant, or a family's financial support?

I have been searching, not just for the answers to these questions, but to many more. Somehow it feels like a puzzle with a few missing pieces. Can we create the larger picture of being profitable and going above and beyond just getting by? I do believe we can. I try the doors and some open, while others need a key. Perhaps sharing my thoughts will provide a key.

We wear a happy face. We are blessed, we know we are. All of us that have this talent are very blessed. In the blessings there is a key to another dimension. We walk thru the sheer veil and what we experience is all in the mind. We are our minds, our thoughts, our passions, our creations, and our talent must come from our soul.

You can tell when someone is creating from their soul. Their work will look like no one else’s artwork. It will be as unique as a fingerprint. If we are all to write a story about what we did last summer, they would all be different. Yet, a group may paint flowers together and many times the teacher assists them, so that they all look alike. Not all artists are creating from the soul. I can attend any art gathering and spot the ones without joy in their hearts. They typically are just copying other artists and always wear a mask.

I have been blessed to be a very talented writer and a visual artist. This comes natural to me just like doing PR, Blogging and Marketing do. I have had many classes with many great and well known artists and some fine writers as well. I have been blessed to do things my own way. For that I am very grateful. I have the joy, I have the passion. I create unique art that is my own. I have a signature style. Even when I think my work looks real different and no one will know it is mine; they do. Something from within me always presents itself in my work, so that others recognize it in a crowd immediately.

I am moved to write, I am not able to “not” paint. These are things I must do; they are within me and must be shared. The colors and words swirl within me; paintings in a slide show format run through my head. I have been hazed and dazed with tons of creativity. It is what propels me through life. It is my passion, it is me; it is what I am. Creating is 100% me. It is my natural state of being.

This writer, artist has never ran out of ideas or faced a blank wall for more than a split second. I am like the proverbial; cup runneth over, my artisan well, runs deep. The more I let out the more I have! The face of joy exists when I am, who I am. When my soul is set free!***********

I look forward to every art meeting to see the happy faces of other passionate artists like myself. Hope to see you at our next art gathering!
Yours truly,
Jean Bourque

Think

This museum quality 30x24 painting is on pre-stretched gallery wrapped canvas. That is art speak for having thick sides. The sides are painted black, forming a natural frame. It is ready to hang and adorn your beautiful home or business office! The painting has about 35 layers of paint so it will hold up through the test of time. It is painted with high quality artists acrylic paint. (Mostly Golden brand, for those that need to know!) This work was done by Jean Bourque in 2007 and it's title is "Think", partly because you have to Think to see what is here in this great looking work and because "thinking" is one of the artist's favorite things to do!
We now accept PayPal, which means you can pay with any charge card you want or check using the PayPal system. (See side bar for info on PayPal) Email the artist for further details regarding this painting.

The Rita Smith Gallery Opportunity

The Rita Smith Gallery is located at 3400 Forest Drive in Richland Mall in Columbia, SC and features numerous SC artists including many painters, jewelers, and potters. The newest artist Rita has added to her artist roster is Harriett Hilton a realistic painter from Orangeburg. Hilton's work often features scenes in nature and life. Her primary medium is acrylic and she typically works on canvas. Harriett is also a very active blogger and an excellent writer. Feel free to take a look at her blog at Artistic Musings. Harriett told me that the Columbia artist Michel McNinch was very inspirational to her when Michel spoke at the Orangeburg Art Guild a few years ago. Michel also has an art blog, you may want to read for more art info.

Rita Smith Gallery is currently taking applications for artists that are working in 3D; such as functional pottery, mosaics and unique items that do not already exist in her gallery. Her gallery has been there a long time and she has an excellent reputation. Even though I was only there for ten minutes, I saw quite a few shoppers and was impressed by this much traffic on a hot Friday afternoon.

The Rita Smith Gallery is located on the first floor of the Richland Mall. The way I got there was by cutting through Barnes and Nobles and then walking across the hall. For me, that was a great way to go, as I discovered a wonderful display of art magazines I had never heard of or seen before, including some that focused on abstract art which is my deepest artistic passion. As an avid reader, any time I can go through a bookstore I am very happy. Art and Books all in one trip to Rita Smith's Gallery in Columbia, SC. Fun!

While at Rita Smith's Gallery the work of Jean Berry caught my eye. She has done some wonderful horse paintings which you may want to take a look at. They are realistic and lovingly rendered. Go ahead and take a trip over to Richland Mall and get a look at all the exciting work at The Rita Smith Gallery.

I have to go now...
yours,
Jean Bourque
