My paintings over the past few years have been mostly painted live in front of an audience and have been mixed media acrylic paintings on pre-stretched canvas, ready to hang without framing. 

I typically use Golden acrylics and mediums, Grumbacher Oils and Montana Gold artist’s spray paints for my paintings. For my mixed media art you will find inks, charcoal, pastels, coffee, dyes, tempera, papers, fabrics, feathers, photography, clay and found objects. 

I painted live to music by Keith Bates at the Haven in February. That painting named "Palm Haven" is currently showing at Tapps Art Center Main St Columbia SC

"Artists as Avatars" asks the hard questions...

"Are artists crazy? Are creators more likely to be mad, or madder, than the rest of us? Does mental distress deepen artistic vision? Correlate to genius? Is the drive to fashion a personal pictorial or plastic universe pathological? Bettina Gockel's hefty Tübingen Habilitationsschrift, “The Pathologizing of the Artist: Artist Legends in Modernity,” documents the significant amount of mental energy expended exploring these and related questions from the mid-nineteenth century into the 1920s. Matthew Biro's The Dada Cyborg argues that the Dadaists’ montages, assemblages, and raucous agitational activities in the public sphere of World War I-era Berlin indicate modernity's disruption of stable subject positions and suggest instead hybrid, “cyborgian” identities. These included challenges to normative notions of sanity, but also to those of gender, ethnicity, race, and national and political allegiance. James van Dyke's study of the Weimar- and Nazi-era career of painter Franz Radziwill, a World War I veteran and self-taught reactionary modernist realist, provides a detailed case study of an artist whom one might, in retrospect, suspect of a degree of grandiosity and careerism bordering on the pathological, but who was driven by a complex of motivations as political as they were personal." 

There is so much to think about in what Peter asks. Non-Artists will often site anyone that works and often does their work for free, must be crazy! Thus business organizations often seek donations of art work from visual artists, donations of books from literary artists, poets, writers and musicians are often asked to perform for free for a good cause! No one works for free...except us artists. 

And why??? 

We do it for love... or for exposure or to prove a point or 

support a cause. Yes, I can certainly understand mainstream

 thinking we must all be crazy!

Paper Assemblage aka Collage

Today, I was just goofing off and playing with cut shapes in paper when a few friends stopped by the studio. They saw this in progress....

So.... I had to share the finished paper collage product.
I named it; "Quarterly Report". I'll admit that is an unusual name for a work of art... but I have a business degree and before I declared business I majored in (no kidding) Accounting! LOL! Now, don't faint or say BS... it is true. Jeanee's Believe It or Not! LOL!!

Let me know what you think of this type of work... should I do more? Or should I just forget about it..or maybe just try it again, next quarter. LOL!

The Pink House of Art

Throughout the past 20  (+/-) years, I have shown my art in a wide variety of places from galleries to furniture stores, coffee shops to theatres. I even had my art hanging for years (and I continue to hang art there) at Palmetto GBA, a div of BC/BS. They are avid supporters of the arts in the greater Columbia, SC area and have held art shows there for years. 

Recently, I went there and picked up about 15 pieces of art. It's funny, you would think as an artist we would remember every piece of art, but honestly as prolific as I have been over the years... I do not remember them all, anymore!

I have this mixed media piece that I had made just before hanging there and I remembered the name instantly when I saw it and was like, wow, I am kinda' glad to have this back as I had never taken a picture of it or shown it anyplace else, including facebook and my blog. LOL!

Seven Oaks Art League meets Thursday Feb 20th

The next meeting of the SOAL will be held Thursday Feb 20th with Michelle Podgorski  of Lowell, NC as featured artist and speaker. Michelle is currently working on her MFA and will be graduating this year. She will have an art talk followed by a demo of her watercolor techniques.  

The Seven Oaks Art League is open to amateur and professional artists interested in supporting the fine arts. They have monthly meetings, art showing opportunities and many artistic activities, including workshops, classes and painting together times. They host an annual art show at the HOFp Art Gallery on Devine St. Columbia, SC.  

Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month, at 7 pm at Seven Oaks Park 200 Leisure Lane, Columbia, SC, USA. Leisure Lane is in between Piney Grove Rd. and St Andrews Rd. Columbia. Your first meeting is free and if you decide to join, the annual dues is $20. a year. Refreshments and fellowship time begins at 6:30 pm. The meetings are held from September through May.
