CICA and USC Art Students United Creativity
We recently were part of a paint to music event through USC's Art program. CICA a group of USC's most talented musicians, many with advanced degrees in their chosen profession and continuing their education and work as performing musicians have created a collaborative association in which they want to add other elements of the arts in combination with the music. CICA provided the artists with several MP3 musical choices and each artist chose the music that most inspired them to create a unique work of art.
The Music I selected to paint to was, "In C", a Terry Riley original composition from the 60's. It just so happens that "In C" was the most collaborative piece and the grand finale of the evening with it's unique sound lasting approximately 18 minutes. Because of the steady beat of the music, I was inspired to dot my canvas in an impressionistic style, keeping the beat as I painted. Here is my painting "In C".
Yours Truly,
Jean Bourque

Inspiration is Everywhere on Main St. Columbia, SC
The new school year has kicked off and so has this season's art year!
In downtown Columbia SC on Main St. every First Thursday, is an
event where many stores, restaurants, museums and other businesses
stay open and celebrate the arts. Everything from visual arts to live
music by area musicians, poetry readings, dance, entertainment of
all kinds abounds and every First Thursday is different.
As a visual artist myself, I do try to attend these First Thursday events
when I can. I did go tonight and saw lots of great art, lots of friends
and heard lots of music. I was really thrilled about the show at Tapps
as I am now attending USC and I have an opportunity to attend a
figure section tomorrow and I saw lots of art that inspired me for Friday
afternoon.
So tomorrow I shall grab my sketch pad and charcoal...

A Surprise at the Old Mill in Lexington SC
Yesterday, I decided to explore the Old Mill on Main St. in Lexington, SC. I hadn't been there since the Chartier's closed their coffee shop over a year ago. It was beside the Watershed, which has now expanded into their former area. We all had so much fun there with poetry readings, musical events, open mics and art shows. I even painted live there. They had wonderful treats, delicious food and a cool vibe and were also reasonably priced.
Parking was for sure easier than I remembered and I didn't have to walk far to get in. It was early evening but it seemed everything was closed on the lower level of the Old Mill. But... I could hear voices and that was when I discovered Theatre Rowe's new location! I peeked inside wanting to be discreet but they heard me and even though I was behind the curtain and they didn't know who was there, they invited me in!
They are in the location where the old dance studio was and they were having a rehearsal for their play tonight, "Who Killed the Boss". It's a dinner theater and it felt really cozy and it is a true black box theatre. I found myself wanting to see the play and Phil himself invited me to attend.
So... if you are not doing anything tonight and you miss attending events at the Old Mill or would love to see a good comedy... go there! I know this is short notice but the play starts at 7PM and doors open at 6...so get there as soon as you can.
Yours Truly,
Jeanee

Thinking about the Art Process
Have you ever looked at an abstract painting and said how do they think up those things? So many people have asked me that over the years. After 20+ years I have realized I do not actually "think up those things". It's all about the art process and I love sharing that. Will be sharing more about this with the art community. Subscribe to this blog now and follow me on Facebook so we can share with each other. What would you like to know?
Sometimes I just use paint, like in the top photo but that is actually a rare event. Usually
I use many mediums and other things this is why I am more of a Mixed media artist than an abstract or impressionistic artist. In the middle photo, I painted this live to Keith Bates music at The Red Door three year party in 2013. The animal looking shape is actually made out of netting material. besides acrylic paint, I also used pastels and charcoal and most of the works are on canvas, like these two above.
Not long after this event I purchased a Gelli plate and OMG, ya'll I have fallen in love with the things that I can make now!! Here is just one photo of a new process I am working with the plate and other odd mark makers...on paper ... sorry for the glare it is under glass. Will get better pics. :)

ARTISTS AS AVATARS PETER CHAMETZKY April 2014 Modern Intellectual History
Professor from USC Columbia SC
"Artists as Avatars" asks the hard questions...
"Are artists crazy? Are creators more likely to be mad, or madder, than the rest of us? Does mental distress deepen artistic vision? Correlate to genius? Is the drive to fashion a personal pictorial or plastic universe pathological? Bettina Gockel's hefty Tübingen Habilitationsschrift, “The Pathologizing of the Artist: Artist Legends in Modernity,” documents the significant amount of mental energy expended exploring these and related questions from the mid-nineteenth century into the 1920s. Matthew Biro's The Dada Cyborg argues that the Dadaists’ montages, assemblages, and raucous agitational activities in the public sphere of World War I-era Berlin indicate modernity's disruption of stable subject positions and suggest instead hybrid, “cyborgian” identities. These included challenges to normative notions of sanity, but also to those of gender, ethnicity, race, and national and political allegiance. James van Dyke's study of the Weimar- and Nazi-era career of painter Franz Radziwill, a World War I veteran and self-taught reactionary modernist realist, provides a detailed case study of an artist whom one might, in retrospect, suspect of a degree of grandiosity and careerism bordering on the pathological, but who was driven by a complex of motivations as political as they were personal."
There is so much to think about in what Peter asks. Non-Artists will often site anyone that works and often does their work for free, must be crazy! Thus business organizations often seek donations of art work from visual artists, donations of books from literary artists, poets, writers and musicians are often asked to perform for free for a good cause! No one works for free...except us artists.
And why???
We do it for love... or for exposure or to prove a point or
support a cause. Yes, I can certainly understand mainstream
thinking we must all be crazy!
I just wanted to share the idea and the info that "Artists Are Avatars". I am showing my support for a fellow artist and writer. So check it out and if you are an artist and want to discuss this further or do a guest blog... just let me know!
Yours Truly,
Jeanee

Paper Assemblage aka Collage
So.... I had to share the finished paper collage product.
I named it; "Quarterly Report". I'll admit that is an unusual name for a work of art... but I have a business degree and before I declared business I majored in (no kidding) Accounting! LOL! Now, don't faint or say BS... it is true. Jeanee's Believe It or Not! LOL!!
Let me know what you think of this type of work... should I do more? Or should I just forget about it..or maybe just try it again, next quarter. LOL!
The Pink House of Art
Throughout the past 20 (+/-) years, I have shown my art in a wide variety of places from galleries to furniture stores, coffee shops to theatres. I even had my art hanging for years (and I continue to hang art there) at Palmetto GBA, a div of BC/BS. They are avid supporters of the arts in the greater Columbia, SC area and have held art shows there for years.
Recently, I went there and picked up about 15 pieces of art. It's funny, you would think as an artist we would remember every piece of art, but honestly as prolific as I have been over the years... I do not remember them all, anymore!
I have this mixed media piece that I had made just before hanging there and I remembered the name instantly when I saw it and was like, wow, I am kinda' glad to have this back as I had never taken a picture of it or shown it anyplace else, including facebook and my blog. LOL!

Doodle for Google (from my mailbox)
YOUNG ARTISTS WANTED....
Calling all young dreamers: Doodle 4 Google 2014 is now open for submissions. This year, we’re encouraging young artists to think big when they create their own Google doodle based on the theme: “If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place…”
The winning doodle will be featured on the Google homepage for a day for millions to see. The winner will also receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant for his or her school. If that’s not cool enough, this year—for the first time ever—the winner will become an honorary Google doodler for a day and animate his or her doodle with the Doodle team.
To get your artists’ creative juices flowing, we’re partnering with Discovery Education to offer videos and activities for teachers and parents. We’re also offering interactive “Meet the Doodler” Connected Classrooms sessions where kids can meet Google Doodlers, learn about their process from idea to Doodle, and ask questions along the way.
Be sure to get all the young artists in your life doodling soon because entries must be received by March 20th 2014. Check outwww.google.com/doodle4google for more details.
Happy doodling!
Thank you,

Days speed by so fast, that much is true
Surprised, a miracle and I am actually here
Looking up ahead; taking the long view.
You see, I have been very lucky my dear
