Abstract Art Show at SC State Museum Now

SC STATE MUSEUM ON THE CORNER OF GERVAIS AND HUGER IN COLUMBIA SC NOW SHOWING.....

Abstract Art in South Carolina: 1949-2012 looks at the evolution and influences of abstract painting and sculpture in South Carolina.


The exhibit includes work by pioneering artists such as William Halsey, Corrie McCallum, J. Bardin, Carl Blair and Merton Simpson, and contemporary artists currently working in communities across South Carolina today, such as James Busby, Shaun Cassidy, Enid Williams, Paul Yanko, Katie Walker and Tom Stanley, among many others.
In all, work by more than 40 artists are included in the exhibition, which focuses on one of the most important aspects of South Carolina’s visual culture.

Thurs. Sept 15th Seven Oaks Art League Meeting


The Seven Oaks Art League is open to amateur and professional artists interested in supporting the fine arts. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month, unless otherwise stated, at 7:00 pm at Seven Oaks Park located at 200 Leisure Lane, Columbia, South Carolina.. Refreshments and fellowship time begins at 6:30 pm and we meet September through May. Annual dues is $20. and webpage is an additional $10.

September 15 Meeting

A State Museum representative will show slides and speak to SOAL about the Hudson River School Exhibition entitled: Nature and the Grand American Vision. The exhibition features 45 magnificent paintings that are traveling on a national tour for the very first time. The program will also include a question and answer session.

SC State Museum hosts "Business of Art" workshop


Business of Art Workshop, Columbia, S.C. --- How to prosper in the art business is the subject of a professional workshop for artists of all levels to be hosted by the South Carolina State Museum April 9-11. Beginning artists and seasoned professionals alike are encouraged to bring examples of their art to this useful weekend workshop that will help them create a business plan and marketing strategy.


The workshop will be run by Tony Rajer, art conservator, artist and instructor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author of “Museums, Zoos and Botanical Gardens of Wisconsin” and of a forthcoming book on the business of art. Each student will write an individual business plan tailored to his or her specific needs. Additional topics include portfolio preparation, gallery contacts and how to receive exposure. Rajer has taught this course for the past 10 years at the University of Wisconsin and is excited to share this course with the South Carolina artist community.


“Tony Rajer's business of art course offers a unique opportunity for artists to learn from an instructor with an experienced insider's perspective on the business side of the art world,” said Chief Curator of Art Paul Matheny. The workshop will go from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, April 9 and from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11.


The workshop is limited to 15 students and costs $100 for members and $125 for non-members. The price includes instruction during the weekend, a week of online counseling after the class and a booklet, as well as other useful handouts.“This class will help provide the knowledge and tools artists need to help them assemble their portfolios and public relations material, and to approach galleries and art centers about their own work,” Matheny said.

SC State Museum: Art Business Workshop

Columbia , S.C. – The South Carolina State Museum will present a four-day workshop for artists entitled “The Business of Art During Hard Economic Times” on Feb. 14, 15, 22 and 28.

Conducted by art conservator and instructor Tony Rajer, the intensive workshop will provide artists with the essential tools to develop an art business plan and marketing strategy as well as valuable tips from field professionals on promoting art and prospering as an artist. Each student will write an individual business plan tailored to his or her needs.

Additional topics include portfolio preparation, gallery contacts and how to get an artist’s work seen. Students are encouraged to bring examples of their art to this useful workshop.

Rajer is an art conservator and instructor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison . He also is the author of the new book Museums, Zoos and Botanical Gardens of Wisconsin and a forthcoming book on the business of art.

The cost of the four-day workshop is $100. Class times are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 28, and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15 and Sunday, Feb.22. Participation is limited; please register early.

Call for Artists SC State Museum 20th Anniversary

The SC State Museum opened in 1988 and now will be celebrating it's 20th Anniversary. What better way to show their support and love for the arts by having a Juried art competition. The show will run April 25 to Sept. 7, 2008.

Things to Know:
Hand Delivered Entries of original artwork deliver April 3, 4, or 5 from 10am and 4 pm
to loading Zone B at The State Museum 301 Gervais St. Columbia, SC. You may submit two works of art along with an entry fee of $25. made payable to The SC Museum Foundation and please list "juried show" on memo line.

Jurors: Brian Rutenberg, an artist originally from Myrtle Beach, SC. While serving as Artist in Residence in 2006 at USC, the SC State Museum hosted a show of Brian's wonderful brightly colored landscapes of the Grand Strand area. Brian earned his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City; where he now resides.
Lia Newman is the Director of Programs and Exhibitions at Artspace in Raleigh, NC. Lia has earned a BA in Art History and a BFA in General Studio with concentrations in photography and sculpture, from Winthrop University. Lia resides in Raleigh, NC.

$1000 Second Place
$500 Third Place
$200 Honorable Mention (up to 5 total)
$100 People’s Choice Award will be selected by the public during the reception

Purchase Award -A Curator’s Choice Purchase Award will be selected by the State Museum’s chief curator of art and the acquisition committee. The winning artwork will be purchased for inclusion in the Museum’s permanent collection.
