Jean will paint to live music by Lauren Streeter during the First Thursday On Main St. event at the Tapp’s Art Center Thurs. July 7^th from 8-9PM. Other performers will be William Christopher and Fred Ingram plus there will be an art show featuring some of Columbia's vibrant visual arts community.

Friday July 8th come by car or come by boat to Buckaroos at Dreher Island Rd. on Lake Murray to listen to the sounds of the DUBA band under the stars. Jeanee will have her brushes and large sheets of water media paper to do live paintings. Every painting done there will be for sale to the highest bidder. Come out and be inspired!

About Face Preview of Museum Show April 18

Many thanks to all The About Face Artists that extended their hospitality to me when I popped in to preview their work for the Big gala to be held April 18th at the Columbia Museum of Art on Main St. Columbia SC. For further details about the Soiree du Soleil Gala just click it.

The close up painting shown is by Bonnie Goldberg, one of my favorite local artists. The silhouette of the city in the background was painting by David West and various art work is shown on the wall here by the About Face Artists.

The event is sure to be talked about by one and all attendees as it is in conjunction with the wonderful Turner to Cezanne exhibit currently showing at the Main St, Gallery in Columbia, SC.

See the story of the Davies sisters and get a behind-the-scenes look at the art and the National Museum of Wales in an ETV special documentary on Wed March 25 at 7:00 PM and Sun March 29 at 3:30 PM. The program, filmed partially in Wales, features Oliver Fairclough, keeper of the art at the Museum of Wales, Lord and Lady David Davies, Anne Oldham, librarian at Gregynog, and Bradford Collins of the USC Art Department. World Music 7pm Columia Museum of Art May 2

The UU Coffeehouse presents the World Music Series, featuring nationally-touring musicians performing original acoustic music with connections to folk, blues, Celtic, bluegrass, jazz and international music. Next on the series is Turku, appearing May 2nd at the Columbia Museum of Art. Turku plays music from the western half of the Silk Road, performing since 1998 for audiences as large as 8,000 people and as far away as Uzbekistan. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the performance begins at at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 for museum members and $5 for student members, or $12 for non-member adults and $7 for non-member students. Runway Runaway at Columbia Museum of Art

The fashion show of the year with Recycled Materials was held last night at the Columbia Museum of Art on Main St in Columbia. It was a huge success and a great fundraiser! They clearly got a much larger crowd than anticipated. The standing room only crowd featured people of all ages and occupations, besides the typical media and artsy crowd.

Rhett Anders, the brainchild behind the event (along with Columbia Design League) led the intros for the evening. Before the show could begin; he instructed all the audience to say as loud as we could "Hey Bitch". The audience followed suit and out come the well known movie star and diva "Lady Chablis" as entertainment. She performed several dance numbers and a few extra dollar bills slid her way, by enthusiastic fans. (clearly they had seen her before!) The outfit I liked the best was a faded denim ensemble worn for the recycled show. It was ripped and torn and adorned with fringe and layered. The top was a midriff bearing crop top. I'd like to know who designed that outfit. I loved it!

The wonderful collection of designs we saw included many beautiful dresses in all lengths. A very southern plantation style dress was made with wine soaked coffee filters, designed by Matthew Mattox and worn by Tamara Greig for a stunning look. I also liked one of the designs by Bohumila Owensby and worn with attitude by professional model Ashley Bennett made out of soda cans and tabs.

One that was great looking and clearly had a lot of work was designed and worn by Jillian Owens. She was in the top 10, which is an honor but she deserved much more!!! The audience voting for the top 6 was a little confusing; she clearly had the loudest applause. But the background music was loud and it didn't get through to the stage that the audience wanted her to be in the top 6. A whole bunch of people booed when she was eliminated because it was a big mistake. Her dress was made from several old prom dresses and romance novels. It was a very elegant looking dress and her hair was really cool too. Girl; who's your hairstylist?? Loved the overall look!

Paige Haggard was funny talking about her design made of Beer caps. She told the audience "this is from a lot of nights getting hammered both literally and figuratively!" If there were an award for most interesting quote of the night; that would be it!!!

As for most professional in every sense of the word, my vote goes to Jeremy Thomas as designer and model. What makes a look really successful, besides looking good, it should be something people will want to buy and wear. Jeremy's outfit had a great look made with towels, curtains and window blinds and it is a very marketable look. If I had been the judge he would have won Number 1 and Jillian Owens would have won Number 2. BTW, I do not know any of the designers or the models in this show.

Anyway, bitches...that's all I have to say. You'll have to google the internet for photos. I only had my cell phone camera and they didn't come out that good. I am looking forward to the event again next year.

Here is a link with some rules - You do not have to make shoes. You can wear whatever on your feet. If you use FABRIC for your outfit, it must be something that was not already an outfit. You could cut cloth off of a sofa, use curtains, feed sacks etc. etc.. You may use an existing outfit for a base to be covered by something.. like kudzu, paper, whatever. A few people want to make accessories, anyone need accessories? Anyone under 18 WILL need permission from a parent or guardian to participate.

It would need to state how many outfits you plan to enter, if you have your own models or not (models must commit to a rehearsal on April 11th). The Art of Seeing Two Day workshop

The Columbia Museum of Art's About Face group believes that "if you wish to be a successful artist, it is essential to take time to train yourself to see things accurately. All the latest painting techniques, gadgets, and gimmicks will not help you create a successful picture if you paint or draw what you know about an object or scene rather than reproducing what is actually right in front of your eyes. Once you learn to see, you can draw or paint anything!" With that in mind, About Face hosts a Two Day Seeing Workshop, January 11 & 12, with instructor Robert H. Way, a member of the American Society of Portrait Artists.
