Neuro-Chemical Breakdown Art Show Review

Anima Jung was the genius behind the unique one night art show held Nov. 12th, 2011 at the Conundrum Music Hall in W Columbia, SC. The premise was there are 8 basic human emotions and 9 artists were each assigned an emotion. We had to keep it secret about which emotion we were assigned, but now the cat is out of the bag. The emotion I was assigned was "Disgust". Those of you that follow my art know my art work is mostly about music, peace, love, flowers, joy, and lively colors. Being a very positive person, at first, I was not happy to be assigned a negative emotion. I knew I would have to make art specifically for the show and thought okay, this is going to take me out of my comfort zone. I spent hours of research online, reading disgusting news, looking at disgusting images and reading what the word "disgust" actually meant. Everyday as I rode all over the state of SC, I thought about what it meant to me.

I started a lot of little projects, one was cutting out news stories that I found to be disgusting and making a handmade book. For some reason, I couldn't bring myself to paint something disgusting so decided to do other artsy things. I sculpted a mask with a digusted look. I cut three wholes in the chin and was going to hang other pieces of clay from it but then opted to make it into a key holder, I attached three brass rings, for the keys to hang on.

The show featured art by Michael Krejewski, Brian Barr, Brian Pyle, Tennyson, Lisa Gray, Allan O'Mudd, Jean Bourque, Cedric Umoja and Mustafa. Each artist explored an emotion. The art show was mainly paintings and they were all wonderful works of art. Tennyson created several shadow box wall hangings, Mustafa showed photography in which Anima the creator of the show was his subject. They were very well done. In addition to three painting jean made a clay mask and a recycled road trash wall hanging. Lighting was provided by RJ Foley and Keith Bates.

The show was for one night only. We all talked about the emotions we were assigned and agreed it was a challenge. Photos here by Keith Bates.

Jean Bourque Live Painting April 27th Artsy Fartsy

April 2011
Jean Bourque kicked off the month with a solo art show at Artsy Fartsy, running for the month. The reception was on April Fool's night. Everyone was expecting a bit of shenanigans by artist Jean Bourque. However, most people were friendly and no tricks were played and only one or two foolery things happened. For one; the reception was slated as going until 830 and it actually went to ten. We were very fortunate to have a good crowd, coming and going throughout the evening.

Keith Bates emceed the event and had 7 musical acts performing live along with two well known poets, Al Black and John M. Starino. The featured band was REDD WYNE, additional performers Kevin Dozier, Michael Sanders, Julia and Barton Beckham, Kurt Linguini and Chief Roy, Mel Simms of Vassaboo, and the evening topper was with William Christoper playing his keyboards. All the musicians were excellent and many folks commented on what a great gala type event we hosted at Artsy Fartsy.

The art by Jean Bourque was well received. The show featured 52 performance paintings all done in the last year to live musical performances by a variety of bands and solo acts. Many people commented on their favorites and people expressed a lot of amazement at seeing so many paintings all in one place by this artist. The show was well lit and hung with professional labels identifying each piece by title and the musical act it was performed too. The musicians especially enjoyed seeing their names and names of their friends and paintings she painted to each.

With 52 pieces, naturally, there is a large selection of works in almost every color. Jean's art palette changes as the music affects her soul. Something that can only clearly be seen in a large exhibit. The show runs thru April 30th, so take a look see at Artsy Fartsy at 906 Knox Abbott Dr. Cayce.

On April 27th, we will have a grand finale party with Mind Gravy featuring music by Bob Kilgore, poetry by Roy Seegars and many more. Jean Bourque will paint live to bob's music and we expect a good crowd. The event will run 8-10. Come on by....

Painting to the Music

This video was filmed outdoors and much to our surprise while I painted and Keith Bates played guitar and sang, the birds joined in and made it a three part harmony! Filmed by Angel Prosser, edited by Jean Bourque and Keith Bates. Song written by Keith Bates of REDD WYNE is titled "Charm" thus the name of the video and the painting. It is a 20x16 with staple free sides.

Here's the video:

We do have one minute of still shots first and then the video starts.

Jeanee Bourque
